The value of paying attention
- 1 min read
Paying attention is one of the most underrated skills in life. Many people look, but not everyone observes. In writing, especially news writing, attention makes the difference between a weak story and a meaningful one.
When I pay attention, I notice details that others may miss: a person’s tone, a small change in a community, a repeated problem, or a quiet concern that deserves more attention. These details can become the beginning of a strong story.
Paying attention also helps me become more compassionate. When I slow down enough to notice people, I become less quick to judge them. I begin to ask better questions: Why did this happen? Who is affected? What is missing from the story?
In a busy world, it is easy to rush past important things. But good writing requires patience. It requires seeing people and situations clearly. I think the best writers are not always the loudest people. Often, they are the ones who have learned how to pay attention.
