What impact has interviewing had on you?

  • 1 min read

Interviewing has helped me listen better. Before, I used to think the most important part of asking questions was knowing what to say next. Now I see that the real skill is paying attention to what the person is actually saying.

A good interview is not just a list of questions. It is a conversation with purpose. Sometimes the best information comes when I stop rushing and allow the person to explain their experience in their own words. I have learned that people open up more when they feel respected and not judged.

Interviewing has also taught me humility. Everyone has a story, and sometimes people know more about an issue than I expected. When I interview someone, I am reminded that I do not already have the full picture. I need their voice to understand the story better.

It has also made me more careful. If I misquote someone or misunderstand their meaning, I can damage the story and the person’s trust. Because of that, interviewing has helped me become more responsible with words.
